Under the Cities COVID Mitigation Mapping (C2M2) project (developed by the US State Department's Humanitarian Information Unit and the American Association of Geographers (AAG)), facility-based data was collected in multiple cities in Africa. The cities included Bukavu (Democratic Republic of Congo), Kericho (Kenya), and Pemba (Mozambique). Health and educational facilities were visited and data collected around service availability, service accessibility, and service quality. Our results have been published as a chapter in the book, The Geographies of COVID-19, published by Springer Nature.
The facility-based data collection and model proposed in the article provides a low-cost and last-mile accurate solution as compared to household enumeration or randomized surveys. The data was ingested, transformed, analyzed, and activated in the Hawkai Data platform.
